The local press

Some media outlets take a little longer to recognize a story, even one in their own back yard. St. Louis Magazine, a local culture and dining monthly, has an article in the June 2009 issue about our whole-genome sequencing approach to studying AML entitled The Code Breakers. You can tell from the tenor of the interview, they’re not exactly targeting a scientific audience (given their target audience this is neither surprising nor a bad thing).

  1. Charlotte Says:

The story seems to be a followup about the development, not a breaking news story. Considering it’s a monthly (not a newspaper or weekly), the lead time might have been a factor.

I don’t get the criticism about its “tenor.” You just recognized the magazine is a “local culture and dining monthly,” not Scientific American.

Personally, I appreciate the magazine is helping inform St. Louis about these researchers’ continuing work, more than most local magazines are doing. Why act so condescending?

  2. Well, Scientific American does not really target a scientific audience either; and targeting a non-scientific audience is not a bad thing. I’ve updated the post to try to remove (or at least lessen) any unintentionally condescending tone. As for the timing, it is a bit late for the initial story but is timely in that we have recently completed the whole-genome sequencing of a second AML tumor genome and its matched normal.

  3. Thanks for noting the article, dd. For what it’s worth, lead time is something we have to deal w/ as a monthly print magazine. That June-issue content, for example, was produced during Feb. and March. We’re now writing September and planning October.

Here’s one more science-related feature we published w/in the last year, if any of your readers are interested: http://www.stlmag.com/media/St-Louis-Magazine/September-2008/Betting-on-a-Biomed-Bulls-Eye/.

  4. Just to clarify, my comments about timeliness should be taken as good-natured ribbing, not menacing remarks. We truly appreciate the good press. Thanks.
