There is a good story in The New York Times about the R statistical programming language entitled Data Analysts Captivated by R’s Power. Analysts are using R more and more at The Genome Center. An entertaining quote in the article comes from R’s competition:

“I think it addresses a niche market for high-end data analysts that want free, readily available code,” said Anne H. Milley, director of technology product marketing at SAS. She adds, “We have customers who build engines for aircraft. I am happy they are not using freeware when I get on a jet.”

Is there anyone who still does not see through this FUD from proprietary software companies when talking about their free software competitors? Oh, and it’s not “freeware”, it’s free software.

Around election time, there is always a lot of talk about red states and blue states, but as with most things presented by the media, the true picture is less strident than reality. Here is a map from Mark Newman, Paul Dirac Collegiate Professor of Physics at the University of Michigan, showing electoral college results with each state resized according to its share of the electoral college vote.

While the map clearly shows that Sen. Obama won the electoral college, it still shows sharp contrasts between red and blue. To get a finer grained, more nuanced picture of the results, Prof. Newman presented the county by county results with the counties shaded blue or red if Obama or McCain, respectively, received over 70% of the vote. More balanced counties are colored in varying shades of purple depending on the way they voted. In this map, the counties are resized according to population.

Clearly, there is a lot of purple and a lot of mixing. Take heart, we aren’t as divided as we are constantly told. You can find more maps and further explanation at Prof. Newman’s election maps site.

Well, it seems the campaign season is in full swing, you can tell by the smell of bs in the air. How can you distinguish the truth from the lies? Well, if you are like many people, the truth is everything that reinforces your world view and the lies are things that contradict your world view. If you desire a more objective definition of truth, I strongly suggest frequent visits to FactCheck.org. They have had a flurry of updates on their main page over the past week or so (RSS feed). So many, in fact, that they have set up a new, rapid-fire response site, The FactCheck Wire (RSS feed). You can also check out their weekly webcast, Just the Facts! Below are some of the more recent and interesting corrections.

Sen. Obama called Sen. McCain’s policies a pig. He did not call Gov. Palin a pig. Sen. McCain himself called Sen. Clinton’s health care policy a pig.

Gov. Palin did not ban any books while mayor of Wassila, although she did explore the idea.

Both the Obama campaign and the McCain campaign have ads distorting the other’s education record.
